Last Friday was a special day in St Mary’s. Sgt David McCarney visited our school and presented us formally with an Irish flag and a copy of the Proclamation of Independnece as part of the State Commemorative Programme for the upcoming centenary of the 1916 Rising. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic was boldly read out by Sgt McCarney, ably assisted by two sixth class pupils. It was a highly emotive occasion greatly enhanced by our own accomplished Banna Ceoil who provided the musical backdrop for the visit. After Sgt McCarney explained how the National flag should be cared for and the protocol involved in flying it, he answered a variety of interesting questions from the pupils. Finally the Banna Ceoil performed Amhrán na bhFiann and the pupils, staff, parents, visitors and friends sang out patriotically. Ní dhéanfaimid dearmad ar an lá sin go deo!
