A very special visitor and a very special message
Many of you will be aware that our Siopa Glas was held on December 1st. The children in the school responded in a most generous way to the Siopa Glas and the raffle. The proceeds from this recycling initiative went to an African Special Needs School. Last Friday Sr Claudia, a former principal of St Mary’s, came in to visit us and told us all about the Special Needs School in Zambia where she worked over the past few years. Sr Claudia shared stories and photographs of children and their families who are so appreciative of the chance to attend the newly set up Flamboyant Special Needs School. Contrary to the sound of its name, the school has very few resources and is a very sparsely decorated building but it has provided opportunities for children with special needs to come and be part of the community and learn life skills. Many of these children are deaf and others are blind. In the past a disability was considered shameful and children with special needs were hidden away. Flamboyant School has given these children a whole new chance at life, meager as it is. Some parents cycle over 30 km with handmade contraptions attached to their bicycles in order to transport their children to this school. Sr Andrea and Sr Claudia want to purchase a new school bus. We at St Mary’s want to help them. We presented a cheque for €500 to Sr Claudia to make a start. Thank you all for supporting our Siopa Glass and the Flamboyant Special Needs School Bus.
