St Mary’s has been an active participant in the National Spelling Bee since 2012.
Every year pupils in 5th Class and 6th Class at our school have the opportunity to take part in spelling bees within their own classrooms. Twenty of those pupils (ten from 5th Class and ten from 6th Class) have the chance to progress to the school final. The in-school spelling bee final is always a tense occasion as the twenty pupils battle it out in front of a packed audience until the eventual school champion is crowned. The winner’s name is engraved onto the school’s Spelling Bee Wall Plaque and the champion then goes forward to represent St Mary’s at the Meath County Final. St Mary’s has in fact hosted the county final on a number of occasions.
One of our past pupils managed to progress out of the county final and on to the Leinster final. The competition was broadcast live on RTE Radio 1 with Ryan Tubridy and proved to be a very exciting day for the entire school community!
